Making the Right Move

Peter Becker Community is a continuing care retirement community and our mission is to meet the physical, spiritual, and emotional needs of older adults in a nurturing and caring environment. For some people it can be challenging to find the right balance of autonomy and support. PBC has three levels of care; Residential Living (also called Independent Living) which is very much like living in your own home but with the added benefit of activities and our campus amenities. Personal Care provides minimal assistance and support services while Skilled Nursing is our highest level of care. Here residents are encouraged to be independent yet staff are available to provide total care of your needs, if necessary.

Residential Living apartment and cottage residents enjoy the freedom to participate in our numerous trips, activities, and volunteer opportunities without the worries of home maintenance. Our spacious and comfortable accommodations allow for residents to create a home they can love with the security of being able to travel without the worry of pipes breaking or the lawn growing too high. Our team of staff members plow the snow from the roads and driveways, fix the appliances, maintain the grounds and manage a host of other home-owner chores. All residents receive full membership to the Indian Valley YMCA on our campus that boasts an Olympic-size pool, whirl pool and fitness center. Residents also have access to our library including computers with free internet access, an on-site pharmacy, three dining venues, and our thrift and gift shops.

As a resident of Residential Living you will be able to visit with a nurse at one of our clinics; nurses are available to do routine blood pressure checks, weight monitoring, dressing changes, discuss medication or health concerns and make referrals to specialists in the area. The nurses cannot diagnose, write prescriptions or monitor daily medications. If you aren’t feeling well you will be referred to your general physician. Each home is provided with a Response Call phone with a pendant for the resident to wear so that emergency services can be contacted in the event of a fall or a health crisis. Residents are welcome to use whatever assistive devices they choose in Residential Living; some people use a cane, walker, or electric wheelchair and some don’t require any assistance. If you find yourself too busy to clean your home, you can hire PBC Housekeeping services. If you love to eat and don’t care for cleaning the dishes, we have two dining rooms plus a café for eat-in or carry out meals. PBC supports aging in place and will guide you and your family through your transition onto campus. To support your needs we have social workers that will assist you in finding resources to help with shopping, bathing, dressing or transportation. When you are no longer able to care for your home or feel ready for more assistance, PBC staff will discuss with you and your family the process of transitioning to a higher level of care. For more information about the amenities included in your Monthly Fee and fee-for-service options, please call the Marketing Representative.

Our Health Care Center is comprised of Personal Care and Skilled Nursing located in the Campus Center. While you are in either Personal Care or Skilled Nursing, housekeeping, laundry, cable television and all of your meals are included in the daily rate. We have a dietitian available for diet consultations; if your doctor has recommended a restricted diet (i.e. as a result of swallowing issues or diabetes, etc.) we will provide your meals according to the doctor’s orders. We have a rotating schedule of specialists (audiologist, podiatrist and optometrist) that visit regularly. We also have a full service dental practice in our community center on campus. There is a team of staff members devoted to activities, rehabilitation, social services, and Pastoral Care. Our interdisciplinary care team coordinates with community agencies for hospice and consulting mental health services. Our goal is to support your independence and maximize your physical and mental abilities through support services and to balance that autonomy with your safety in mind. For more information about accommodations in the Health Care Center, insurance coverage and the daily rate information, please call the Admissions Coordinator.

Our Personal Care accommodations are for those individuals who would benefit from assistance with daily tasks. Residents are welcome to attend the activities on campus, participate in trips, go on vacation with family members and maintain life long relationships and interests. Residents of Personal Care have access to staff members 24 hours a day who will schedule your doctor appointments, arrange for transportation and administer all medications unless your doctor supports self administering medications. An attending PBC physician coordinates your plan of care and visits annually; additional visits are scheduled as needed. If your current physician is not one of the approved PBC physicians you would be required to change physicians while residing in Personal Care. The certified nursing aids are available to provide minimal assistance or supervision with your dressing, bathing and toileting needs.

To qualify for Personal Care, you must be able to evacuate the building in the event of a fire. If you are most comfortable ambulating by wheelchair, you must be able to self-propel the wheelchair.

Skilled Nursing can accommodate those who need a brief stay for rehabilitation purposes such as following heart surgery or a joint replacement. We also care for those who have multiple health concerns and are living with these progressions combined with the aging process. Our philosophy is to encourage residents to realize their highest levels of physical and mental abilities. Professional nurses and certified nursing aides provide assistance with activities of daily living (bathing, dressing and toileting). A Certified Registered Nurse Practitioner visits the site bi-weekly to evaluate our residents. An attending PBC physician coordinates the plan of care and visits monthly. If your current physician is not one of the approved PBC physicians you will be required to change physicians while residing in Skilled Nursing.

Please call our Admissions Coordinator for a tour and more information about our Health Care Center.
