Green Team Shares and
Gathers Green Ideas!

by PBC Resident, George Keck  -  for the November 2011 CHIT CHAT article
11/11/11

In September, the Peter Becker Green Team hosted visitors from Foulkeways, a continuing care community at Gwynedd. The Foulkeways’ folks came to learn about our composing program initiated by Bill Richman our general manager of food services. The folks from Foulkeways were so impressed that they invited Peter Becker’s Green Team to visit their community.
On October 14, representatives from our Green Team (Bill Richman, Christel Barker, Mary Reichley, and George Keck) visited Foulkeways. Here we learned about their plans for energy efficiency, geothermal renewable energy, water conservation, and land use! All of this is being done with the major focus on sustainability of natural systems. The result is a major savings in energy costs for Foulkeways. In fact, they even have a “Cost Saving Team!”
We all have a lot to learn. We all can save money. This also was a key learning at the October 13 meeting in Orchid Terrace with a representative from PPL about our cost of electric. Being Green has both ethical and economic advantages. Want to learn more? Come join the Green Team.

Abitibi Report:
In the month of September 7,467.5 pounds of paper was collected. To date this year, 81.45 cubic yards of landfill has been saved and 111,369.30 KWH of energy.

5 Things

We Learned:

green11pbc5

1. Do Not Eat Lunch Before Attending The Green Fair.

A bountiful tasting buffet was free for guests offering lots of organic and locally produced food and drink.

2. Do Not Grocery Shop Before Attending the Green Fair.

Skippack Creek Farm had a booth with beautiful tomatoes, corn, peaches, herbs, jellies, squash and more. They were all organically grown and priced right.

3. Purple Martins and Barn Owls are Good Friend of the Environment.

If you attended this seminar, you would be installing a Purple Martin House near your home, just like Peter Becker Community did recently.

4. There are Lots of Reasonable Priced Products Available That Do Not Adversely Affect our Soils, Water or Environment.

Several exhibitors showed guests how many choices are available.

5. Saving the Earth is a Big Job made of a lot of Little Ones. What will you try?

Pick something to start today: Recycle • Compost • Buy from Local Farmers • Save Energy • Choose Earth Friendly

On July 28th,  the Peter Becker Community Green Team, presented the second annual "Green Fair for Eco-Friendly Living". The event was open to the public and invited guests to find out what they can do to protect the earth. There were several seminars on green topics like: Composting, The Environmental Benefits of Purple Martins and Barn Owls, Recycling & Sustainability and Constomer Confusion. The event also featured an organic foods buffet, a recycling event sponsored by 611 Metals.com, a Farmer's Market, and several vendors who provide Green Products! It was a great green event.

PBC Green Team Planted an Arbour Day Tree

arbour_day_tree1

On Friday, April 19th a small group assembled to plant a tree at Maplewood Estates. The tree was a weeping cherry. Residents were excited about the possibilities of cherry blossoms next spring. The planting was coordinated by the communities Green Team. A group that encourages earth friendly practices. The same team recently sponsored two purple martin houses to be installed near the ponds at Maplewood Estates. According to Bill Richman, Green Team Leader, "The group does research about each change it implements. The residents were really in favor of the the purple martin houses. They eat a lot of insects and they are just beautiful to watch."

Thanks to Bill Richman for the comunity news tip.
